Influence That Serves: Reclaiming Leadership Through Humility and Action

Influence in the Kingdom of God is not built on position, platform, or recognition – it is formed through posture. Jesus makes this clear in Mark 10:45: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve…” In a world that elevates status, Jesus elevates surrender. He redefines leadership not as power over people, but love expressed through service.

In John 13:14-15, we see this redefinition in action. Jesus, fully aware of His authority, chooses to kneel and wash His disciples’ feet. This is authority inversion – where true leadership lowers itself rather than exalts itself. It is a call to embrace responsibility before rights, asking not “What am I owed?” but “What can I carry?” A foot-washing mindset requires the death of ego. Where must pride decrease so Christ can be revealed through you?

As we grow in service, we begin to see differently. Philippians 2:4 urges us to look beyond ourselves. Many needs go unnoticed….not because they are absent, but because we are distracted. Observational awareness helps us recognize what others overlook, while compassion fatigue resistance keeps us rooted in God as our source. Through discernment, we sense needs that are unspoken. Attentiveness becomes love in action.

Jesus also teaches in Matthew 5:41 to go the extra mile. This is not about striving, but intentionality. Voluntary sacrifice chooses more when less would suffice – because people matter. Margin investment ensures we are serving from overflow, not depletion. Often, the extra step speaks the loudest.

Finally, Matthew 6:3-4 calls us into hidden service. Recognition can be addictive, but secrecy forms humility. Motive purification asks: would I still serve if no one knew? True joy is found not in applause, but in alignment with God’s heart. What is done in secret carries eternal reward.

Next Step:

“Jesus, shape my heart to serve like You. Help me lay down pride, see what others miss, and give with joy and humility. Teach me to love without needing to be seen. Amen.”

Growth Activity:
At the end of each day, reflect: Where did I serve? What did I notice? What checked my motives? Write one sentence daily to track how your heart is being transformed.
